DTU, previously DCE, is a leading institution of technology and engineering in New Delhi.
Delhi Technological University (DTU) is a leading institution of technology and engineering, located in New Delhi, India. Despite its reputation, your quest to find information on the college may be thwarted by conflicting sources because of a recent name change. DTU started out as the Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) and has recently gained university status. It is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country and was also the first of its kind in Delhi.
Programs offered & student strength
DTU offers undergraduate Bachelor’s degrees in various branches like computer science, IT, mathematics, software engineering and mechanical and automotive engineering, among others. The college also offers Master’s degrees in engineering and technology, as well as doctorates in philosophy. There is a strong emphasis on scientific research and technological education. DTU has around 1,500 seats for its bachelor of technology program, but 85% of these seats are reserved for students from the Delhi region. There are around 320 seats for students who wish to pursue a Master’s degree.
Students who do get in to DTU thrive on campus, both academically and socially life. The dhaba in front of the college campus is probably the most popular hangout with students always thronging the place, but there are also other popular eateries and fast food joints in the area, like Dominos and Zaika.
Academic set up, location and infrastructure
After the college was awarded university status a number of new BE programmes were introduced, like those in automobile engineering, electrical engineering and engineering physics, along with others. Other courses in technology and management were also recently introduced.
The last two decades have witnessed plenty of changes, with the college also moving to a huge 164 acre campus in Northern Delhi, just next to Bawana Road. The new campus is expansive and its lush green environment makes the atmosphere on campus relaxing and serene. The university campus also houses a large library, a computer centre, a sports complex, and gymnasium. It even has an auditorium and an open air amphitheatre.
There are 15 hostels in all on campus – eight hostels for boys, six for women, and one for married couples. The university also has accommodation facilities for its staff and faculty.
USP & events
DTU is one of the few universities to offer scholarships to students, right from their first year. These are awarded based on their performance in subjects. Another award that sponsors tuition fees for an MBA at the Raj Soin College of Business is given to two final year students. The university doesn’t just focus on academics however, and there are plenty of extra-curricular activities for students on campus.
The university’s cultural festival Engifest, which takes place in February of each year is a break from academics and hosts various events like theatrics, fashion shows and rock concerts. The various departments in the college also organize academic events and symposiums to celebrate and showcase research.
Awards, accomplishments & alumni
DTU has consistently ranked high in almost all published educational institutions ratings. The college has appeared in Outlook India’s top 10 list of engineering colleges in the country twice, and was also rated by Outlook as number 1 in terms of placement. It was ranked as the 12th and 3rd best engineering college in the country by Dataquest and CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey, respectively.
The institute also has an active alumni association, both at home and overseas. The alumni association holds annual meets and also celebrates the accomplishments of its members.
College placements at DTU wildly surpass expectations, as it has one of the best training & placement cells. There are regular training programs on campus and there are often events that involve industry collaboration. Salary ranges are also considerably high, with the highest domestic salary that was awarded, reaching 22 lakhs per annum in 2013.
Campus placements at DTU draw in some of the biggest players with the likes of Google, Microsoft, IBM, Yahoo, Amazon, Larsen & Toubro, JP Morgan and plenty of others!
